DPMM win right to stay in title race with Home and Muda challenge ending

3 teams went into the weekend games with a shot at the title thanks to Albirex 4-3 win over Tampines Rovers 3 days.

In the end, only one, DPMM Brunei, came out of it still with a shot  There was always going to be a team who will drop out as DPMM were squaring off against Home at Hassanal Bolkiah National.

It was a match neither can lose for this meant the end of their season as a whole. The door was open to them but who can take advantage as they have to win this encounter and a draw will do neither good.

So both came to attack and it was the visitors, Home United, who showed the deadly touch as they went 2-0 up within half-time thanks to Shi JiaYi and Frederic Mendy.

After the break, it was another story as Shahrazen Said, Patrick Da Silva and Adi Said gave DPMM the lead and if a coach was judged by the brave decision he make then Croatian coach Vjeran Simunic showcased it.

He took off his top scorer and scorer of the first DPMM goal, Shahrazen Said, to make way for Adi Said and the substitute repay the faith of the coach as he was the one who got the winning goal.

With that, Home United title challenge was over and soon to follow was Harimau Muda.

The Malaysian side saw their challenge ended by Gombak United, the bogey side of title challengers.

The Bulls had stalled DPMM Brunei challenge earlier in the month and then did it against Tampines Rovers in their last match and now it was the turn of Muda.

This time, it was costly as the Malaysian side title challenge was gone as they went down 1-2.

Zulfadhli Emran and Jung Hee Bong got the goals for the Bulls while Wan Zack Haikal reply for the Malaysians.

In another match, Hougang drew 2-2 with SAFFC.

Jordan Webb and Azhar Sairudin got the goals for Hougang while Mislav Karoglan and Shimpei Sakurada reply for the Warriors.

Albirex beat Champions in thriller to open up title race

If Tampines want to retain the 2012 S-league crown then they have to fight for it as Albirex are not going to give it up.

Three times the defending Champions took the lead and yet Albirex Niigata (S) came back all the time and if that was not enough they took all 3 points towards the end with Sho Kamimura winner.

Right from the start, both teams show their attacking instinct as they went at one another. And there was no rest bite as the Stags took the lead at the start through Sead Hadzibulic.

The White Swans came back thanks to an error of judgement by the Stags custodian Sasa Dreven who lost the flight of the shot by Yasuhiro Yamakosh.

Almost immediately the Stags struck again, this time through Ahmad Latiff but 10 minutes before half-time, the Japanese outfit was back on level term as Yasuhiro Yamakosh got his second.

Level at the break but not soon after as Aleksandar Duricgot into action as he put the Stags ahead once more. However tonight, Yasuhiro Yamakosh was on fire and he got his hat-trick.

Then disaster for the defending champions as Fahrudin Mustafic got send off and the 10 men had to defend for another 15 minutes.

It was not to be as Albirex got the fourth to claim all 3 points and open up the title race.

In another match, Tanjong Pagar drew 1-1 with Courts Young Lions. Hafiz Osman had scored for both sides with the first the error before making up for it.

Champions fail to close title race as DPMM go up to second

Champions Tampines Rovers failed to close up the title race as they were held to a draw by Gombak.

This mean Tampines have to beat Albirex in 4 days time to end all talks about any challenge on the title.

It should not have been the case as Sead Hadzibulic gave the Stags the lead in the first half but the Eastern giant was unable to close the game. They pay for it as Bulls pull back on level towards the end through ex Eagles Hafiz Rahim.

It gave DPMM an opening as the Brunei side climb up to second.

DPMM have a game in hand and are 7 points behind the defending champions. Win their game in hand and it is only 4 while the top 2 clashed in their next meeting and any result other than a win for Tampines will benefit DPMM.

The Brunei side thrash Tanjong Pagar 3-0 with goals from Shahrazen Said and Ivan Jerkovic (2)

In other matches, Harimau Muda beat Woodlands Wellington 2-0 while Geylang also beat Courts Young Lions 2-0.

Thamil Arasu scored both goals for the Malaysian side.

Alam Shah return had caused problem within team

Tampines coach Tay Peng Kee had revealed to Goal website Noh Alam return had caused problem within the team and he was the one who resolved it.

Apart from revealation about Noh Alam Shah issue, Tay also spoke about how he foster a better team spirit with the players

He claimed after the Hougang game (His first game in charge) he had hold a meeting as he felt team morale and spirit was missing.

After the meeting, players knew what he wanted and that why they got the win against to go top of the table.

For the Noh issue, he also had a talk with the players as he wanted the team to welcome Noh and give a chance to gel with the team so he can be an asset.

He believed the team has done that and that is why the team is doing well.

Tay also hope to continue to work with the team beyond this season.

Tampines grip on top tighten with Albirex double defeats

The 2012 title look like it is heading back East to Tampines again as the Champions won their match against Courts Young Lions while Albirex Niigata (S) lost both their games against Balestier Khalsa and Hougang United.

With these results, Tampines have open up a eight-point gap with a game in hand.

The first good news came when Balestier Khalsa beat Albirex Niigata (S) 1-0 thanks to a goal from Kim Minho.

It meant the champions could open up their lead further with a win against the Cubs and they achieved that with ease as they won 3-0 at Jalan Besar.

Regular marksman Aleksandar Duric was the hero with a brace with another coming from Ahmad Latiff.

Then 3 days after their loss to Balestier, Albirex lost their second match in succession despite a brace by Yamakoshi Yasuhiro.

The Hougang had knocked in 3 times after the opener by Albirex thanks to Mamadou Diallo, Sobrie Mazelan and Jordan Webb.

Even with Albirex next match scheduled to be against Tampines; in which they have to win, the title race is out of their hands due to the results of the last few days.

In other matches, both SAFFC and DPMM Brunei ended their wretched with Warriors beating Woodlands Wellington and DPMM beating Courts Yong Lions.

SAFFC won 2-1 at home at Choa Chu Kang while DPMM beat Cubs 3-1 at Jalan Besar.

They have been held to a 1-1 draw at home by mid-table Gombak United with Shahrazen Said scoring for the Brunei side before Obadin Aikhena equalise for the Bulls.

The Brunei side who have been brilliant in the first half of the season have now started the second half with 4 loss from 5 games and with Gombak draw, they have only got 4 points from a possible 24.

Stags go top as they win first game under new coach

Surely it was much easier, in theory at least, to beat Hougang than Home but it was not to be as the Stags failed against Hougang but succeed against Home.

But no matter who it was against, Tampines got the 3 points to send them top of the table as they Tampines Rovers beat Home United, a main rival, 2-0.

It has not only open their account under new coach Tay but allowed to overtake Albirex Niigata (S) by 2 points.

The Eastern giant has now won 7 of their last 8 matches.

Aleksandar Duric and Sead Hadzibulic got the goals in the game.

In other matches, Woodlands lost 1-2 to Gombak, DPMM Brunei fall 1-2 to Harimau Muda and Geylang and Tanjong Pagar drew 0-0.

Warriors title dream is surely over

The Warriors title dream are surely over as they lost yet again.

This time it was yet another unfancied side, Tanjong Pagar, who dealt them the blow as they defeated the eight-time champions 1-0.

It was former Warriors defender Hafiz Osman that blew the Warriors hopes as he netted the winner.

The Warriors need a miracle to win the S-league crown now.

In other matches, it was draw all around as Albirex Niigata (S) drew 0-0 with Home United and Balestier and Geylang also play out to a 0-0 draw.

As for Tampines, it was a draw as well as they failed to win their first match under new coach Tay in which they were held to a 1-1 draw with Hougang.

The Stags took the lead but failed to hold and allowed the cheetah to draw level.

Mamadou Diallo scored for the Cheetah with Stags goal an own goal.

Tampines change coach after League Cup exit

Champions Tampines Rovers has move to change their coach after their defeat in the Starhub League Cup to Geylang United.

Technical director Tay Peng Kee has been apppinted as the new coach replacing Steven Tan.

The reason is chairman Teo Hock Seng believe the team needed a new direction as he feel they are slacking off again and returning back to where they were eariler in the season.

The Stags are fighting for the S-league again after going on a 6-match winning streak w hen earlier in the season they were struggling to compete.

Teo has been impressed by Tay as he was able to help Ahmad Latiff pass his Beep Test when all the other staff, including head coach Steven Tan, failed.

So Teo think Tay is the man to bring the team back on track.

Steven Tan will go back to coaching the Prime League Team.

A president who rise and fall with it

Since the release of plans for next year S-league came out, there have been much talks on it and much of it bad.

Quite frankly, I have no view on it as I cannot tell if the plans will work or out for I noted many times before; all plans have pros and cons so nobody can claim with any certainty their plans will run 100% smoothly at all time.

More importantly, for me, the plans are not the problem, it is the system that currently just parachute a person to the top.

Yes, I am talking about the post of FAS president and here is an old POV article - Have longer term for FAS president make more sense.

My view has not changed since that POV article two years ago and at this point, Singapore football need a FAS president for the long term ever more for in that link, I already know revamp after revamp will not work and it only result in frustration for all around as sponsors Courts and Blogger Pohui have voiced it out.

And two years down the road, I see another terrible effect thanks to a FAS president who stay for just 4 years.

Indeed, with much problems still plaguing Singapore football at the grassroots level in the S-league, the turth is our current FAS President is about to walk away from it all without much harm to his career at all.

This can easily be seem by Home United example two years back under the stewardship of Koh Siong Ling in which it cost the Bishan club the S-league crown and yet in the end, the now ex-Home United chairman can walk away from it all.

The best part for the current FAS President, he will be coming out smelling of roses as let not beat around the bush, the Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) media will be singing his praises when he depart next year telling us of the 'great achievements' of the past 4 years.

All failures (if SPH do list them as there are many) will be directed to the orgainisation; meaning Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and in no way was it FAS president fault.

Yet the question is should not the organisation (FAS) be him and him the organisation as he was it leader for the past 4 years.

So we can see the biggest flaw of the current system; it neither reward good leadership nor punish bad one.

The fact is other than a longer term for FAS president, we also need one who is linked to it (By it, I mean Singapore football) fall and rise.

And it does not mean it must be a sport personality or not; for many sport organisations are not led by them.

The best example is everybody favourite league Braclay Premier League (BPL); whose head is a former newsman Richard Scudamore.

When he took over BPL, it was still not top of the pack yet and a product everybody must have for other major European leagues have their own market as well.

However, he understood the trend and in an age when then-German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder told the world Bundesliga will play on Sunday over his dead body, the BPL introduced 12 pm UK time games to attract the Asian audience.

No other European Leagues make as much efforts as BPL did and looked at the results today in which it lead the other major European Leagues by a huge margin in the money stake and they are now playing catch-up with Serie A and La Liga all playing games that are suited for Asia since last season.

Richard Scudamore career is linked to his product (BPL) and if he had fail to grow it as brilliantly as the past decade, he will be out of a job.

So it is clear longevity is just one of the factor for the post and we need a new system in which Singapore football and the S-league has a President who rise and fall with it as well and not just walk away every 4 years no matter what.

For in a bid to prevent a Loh Lin Kok (Singapore Athletic Association former President), we created a Zaindiun Nordin which is far worse.

DPMM Brunei have became the first team to win the League Cup twice as they lift the 2012 Starhub League Cup

The Brunei side last won the League Cup back in 2009 in their debut year in the S-league.

Shahrazen Said and Azwan Saleh got the goals that gave the Brunei side victory over Geylang United.

For the Eagles, this mark another disappointment to their season if which they are languishing in last place in the league.

However, they hoped the ability to reach a Final will spur them on in the league and enable themselves to lift themselves out of bottom place in the coming months.

As for this is also the Brunei side second honour in the Singapore football scene.

Geylang down Tampines in derby to reach final

Geylang United defeat Tampines Rovers 2-0 for the first time this year to reach the Starhub League Cup final.

This is the Bedok side first final in 3year since they reached he RHB Singapore Cup in 2009 when they won it.

The Eagles must be hoping for a repeat of such a scenario as they endure a difficult 2012 season thus far.

The Eagles took the lead through Jozef Kaplan and double the lead thanks to Stefan Milojevic before the end.

Paul: Wilkinson will not play under me again

Home United coach Paul Lee has announced John Wilkinson has no future in Home United after the both of them had a falling out.

Despite the end result which saw a 7-3 thrashing of Geylang United, it seem John Wilkinson did not take kindly to being substituted before half-time especially as the Protectors had just equalised.

Paul Lee believed Wilkinson was not following his instruction and decided to take him off as punishment.

The 33-year-old did not take kindly to that move and let his coach know of it as he walk off.

The Home United coach have decided he will not tolerate the former international anymore as it was not their first clash.

And the Korean has put the blame squarely on the midfielder as he revealed Wilkinson has not shown him respect right from their first encounter in training in January and since then, he has continue to show that kind of attitude with him and showing no desire to play for Paul Lee.

John Wilkinson is the third Home United player to fall out with the Korean in the last 3 year with the others being Brazilian Peres and defender Shariff Abdul Samat.

Muda to play their home games in Malaysia next season

CNA has reported Harimua Muda will be playing their home games in Malaysia next year.

The games will either be held in Johore or Malacca.

I think this is a good idea as I never know why the Malaysian side is based in Yishun for what in the first place and they should have played their home game in Malaysia from the start.

Afterall Brunei DPMM are based in their home back on Borneo Island.

This is a good move in the right direction.

Next though, I have to ask if S-league will then have to continue to pay full subsidises to Muda as 1) they will be playing their home games in Malaysia 2) They may be sending a different team next season from what they promised.

Champions defeat League leader

If DPMM Brunei want the league title from the Champions,  Tampines Rovers, then they are in for a fight as the Eastern side show they are in no mood to give it up.

The Stags handed the Brunei side their second loss of the season and close up the gap on the league leader.

Indeed this was a valuable win as this season the teams only meet twice so the Stags have no better chance to close the gap on DPMM.

And they did it in dramatic fashion as Gligor Gligorov grabbed the winner in injury-time.

In other matches, Hougang end Jaguars run of wins as they defeated the Queenstown team 1-0 and Courts Young Lions defeated Woodlands Wellington 2-1.

Jordan Webb got the winner in the Jaguars- Cheetah matchup.

Faris Ramli and Nazrul Nazari got the goals that won all 3 points for the Cubs with Korean Moon Soon Ho replying for the Rams.

Warriors run end

SAFFC run of win have come to an end as they were held 2-2 by Geylang United.

This is a disappointing result as the Eagles have been in terrible form this season and have lost 2 of their last 3 games and gained only 1 point with no goals in those games.
