Tay content with Tampines' 'comfortable' lead

Tampines coah Tay Peng Kee was content after his side stretched their lead at the top of the Great Eastern-YEO's S-League with a 4-2 win over Courts Young Lions.

The result was enough to move Tampines eight points clear of second-placed Albirex Niigata (S) with a game in hand, and Tay admits he is pleased with where his side are heading into the final stretch of the season.

"We are in a comfortable position," he said. "As far as we are concerned, we are trying to wrap up the title as soon as possible.

"It's definitely a good sign to go into the [international] break with an eight-point lead.

"Hopefully, this will also demoralise the rest of the teams that are chasing us."

Nonetheless, the ex-Singapore international was slightly disappointed with how there were times when his side were put under pressure by their opponents, who have only picked up three points all season long, although he claimed he was always confident they would get the job done despite missing a number of first-teamers.

"It has always been the case for Tampines," Tay explained.

"We always struggle when we play against weaker opponents; I don't know why. This is probably because of complacency.

"Shaiful [Esah], Jufri [Taha] and our first-choice goalkeeper [Andre Martins] were all out today [Tuesday], but that's football. You have to have a strong squad.

"I was definitely not worried even when Young Lions scored the opener as we went on the aggressive after that. I like my team to play aggressive football.

"You can see we press and go forward but we can sometimes get caught out. But if it doesn't work, we are capable of changing the plan and sitting back instead."

The hosts were also without a number of key players and Young Lions coach Aide Iskandar believes there were positives to take from Tuesday's defeat.

"Of course, it was a much better performance from the boys [compared to the 2-1 defeat against Harimau Muda]," he said. "We passed the ball well and looked good in some parts of the game.

"It's not easy playing Tampines and we had a few key players out like Afiq [Yunos], [Sheikh Abdul] Hadi and [M.] Anu[manthan]. I thought we did well but I wasn't too happy with the two goals we conceded in the first half.

"Other than that, I have to give credit to the boys for coming back after the Harimau defeat. Today [Tuesday] was a positive performance."

Given his side's struggles this season, which have not been helped by the Young Lions' longstanding issues with the players' National Service (NS) commitments, the former Singapore captain was also hopeful that the league would be more considerate when scheduling their fixtures.

"I hate to say this but it's not fair for me to push the players too much because they're coming from NS duties, school and it's the fasting month as well," Aide added. "It's a bit too much for them and I think that's the reason why we haven't done well during Ramadan.

"Plus the games are being played on weekdays. I hope they [the S.League] will take this into consideration and play our games on weekends.

"All three points we got so far were from matches on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

"You can see today [Tuesday] that Syazwan [Buhari] was running out of breath; he was on [NS] duty for 24 hours and only slept for four hours. But he's my best goalkeeper and I have to play him in a match likes this.

"I know NS is an issue and we have to work around it, but I hope the fixtures can be kind to us."

No stopping Tampines

Tampines Rovers beat Courts Young Lions 4-2 to open up a 8-point lead at the top and the champions still have a game in hand.

Despite falling behind in the top-against-bottom clash at the Jalan Besar Stadium after Iqbal Hussain opened the scoring in the 14th minute, the Stags overturned the deficit shortly after the half-hour mark thanks to quickfire goals from Kunihiro Yamashita and Shahdan Sulaiman.

Their lead was extended in the 63rd minute when Fahrudin Mustafic fired home a penalty following an incident which also saw Farhan Rahmat receive a straight red for handling the ball on the line, before the Tampines captain made it 4-1 with another spot-kick seven minutes later to wrap up the points, although the hosts did manage to pull one back 16 minutes from time when Yamashita scored an unfortunate own-goal.

In another match, Warriors FC drew 0-0 with Geylang International, a result that will do neither side any favours in their bid to finish in the top six.

Stewart happy to keep playing 'poorly'

Balestier Khalsa coach Darren Stewart humorously hit back at his side's detractors following 3-1 win over Hougang United in the Great Eastern-YEO's S.League.

The result was enough to take Balestier up to fourth on the table and they look on track to finish inside the top half for the second season running under Stewart.

Yet, their consistent displays have been slightly tarnished by detractors who claim the Tigers are overly aggressive and play "route one" football, with some of these criticisms stemming from opposition coaches.

Nonetheless, the good-natured Stewart chose to brush off these jibes by claiming he did not matter how badly his side were playing as long as they continued to pick up three points each game.

"We didn't do too badly for a 'bad' team," he replied with a hint of sarcasm, drawing laughs from the media congregation. "I was brought in to get results and that's what we're doing.

"As long as we keep playing 'poorly' we'll be fine."

The Australian did however give a honest appraisal of his side's display against the Cheetahs and believes they can still take their game up another level, although he was proud of their overall effort.

"That was pretty close," Stewart answered, when asked if it had been a perfect performance. "We were perhaps a little bit off our game in the first half but that's okay.

"I can't complain much really; the boys aren't robots and you can't expect them to do anything about the late goal [conceded]. There would be something wrong with me if I got too upset about that.

"We're just playing decent, winning football. I was hired to win football games
and that's what we're doing.

"I think things are looking very positive as long as we keep working hard and not get ahead of ourselves, which we won't do because there are too many good people at this club to let that happen."

Stewart did however look tired when asked again about the display of Qiu, who once again proved his value to the side with a stunning strike, when he trapped a long ball on his chest and sent a 30-yard volley looping over Fadhil Salim and into the back of the net, as well as winning the penalty for Borges to convert.

"I'm not sure why I'm still having to answer questions about Qiu Li," he said. "He's just a terrific player and a wonderful person.

"People continue to want to make a case against him but he does his talking on the pitch, as he did tonight [Monday].

"That was [a] world-class [strike] but that's why he's here. We don't need to talk about Qiu Li any more but without the other players, he won't be able to do what he does."

Meanwhile, Hougang United assistant coach Amin Nasir, speaking on behalf of Johana Johari who declined to be interviewed, believes his side's failings in the attacking third had ultimately proved the difference on the night.

"The game and the final scoreline was disappointing," he said. "But congratulations to Balestier; they played well and they are a good side.

"We improved from the [RHB Singapore Cup] quarter-finals [where they lost to Balestier on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw] but didn't really create chances. Balestier took shots and we tired to create, but our combination play let us down.

"Overall, we're quite pleased with the way we tried to compete. The boys tried to put on a good show but they just did not take their chances."

The defeat also means the Cheetahs can no longer finish inside the top six, and Amin admits they will now shift their attention to pulling away from the bottom two.

"Right now we're stuck inside the bottom two," he added.
"
We need to analyse what went wrong and train hard for the next game."

Qiu Li inspired Balestier

A spectacular opening strike from Qiu Li sent Balestier Khalsa on their way to a dominant 3-1 win over Hougang United in the Great Eastern-YEO's S-League at Toa Poyah.

It was dominated by the hosts after that goal and they doubled the lead when Kim Min-ho strike in 5 minutes into the second period.

Vitor Borges then wrapped up the points when he scored from the penalty spot, although the visitors did manage to grab a consolation three minutes from time when substitute Shahir Hamzah nodded home from close range.

In another match, Tanjong Pagar United recorded a 3-2 win at Woodlands Wellington to move 2 points behind Albirex Niigata (S).

Monsef Zerka got a brace along with a goal from Kamel Ramdani.

Woodlands Chang Jo-yoon reply with his own brace for the Northern club.

We are still in it

In an evenly-contested Uniform Derby at the Jalan Besar Stadium, the contest was decided in the 14th minute when Home were awarded a spot-kick and Lee Kwan-woo score after his initial effort was saved by Hassan Sunny.

Home assistant coach Aidil Sharin insists they are still in with a shout of challenging for the title after their morale boasting win.

"We're close to the end of the second round now and we just want to take one game at a time," he explained.

"We want to get maximum points from our next two games so we can challenge the likes of Albirex [Niigata (S)], Tanjong Pagar United and even Woodlands [Wellington], who are now fourth [before Home's win]. Then we'll see how it goes.
"We can't say no to challenging for the title. We'll fight till the end until it's no longer possible, and you can see the boys have the desire."

Although the Protectors could - and perhaps should - have wrapped up the three points by grabbing a second, Aidil believes their lack of a finishing touch is nothing to get overly worried about.

"It's a good win for us," he added. "Although it's a slim win, it's a good morale boost.

"We're getting there in terms of where we think our best football is at. We create lots of chances and the boys are trying their best, but they just couldn't get the last touch to put it into the back of the net.

"It's not a problem; the good thing is that they're creating chances.

"What pleased us the most was that the boys worked for the entire 90 minutes. They were disciplined, they gave it their all and they were always fighting.

"Even when we were 1-0 up and Warriors were coming at us, we still looked to attack and never gave up."

As for Warriors coach Alex Weaver, he was unable to hide his disappointment that there appeared to be little contact between Lee and Chiang and such an incident proved the difference.

"Yes, I think it was [a bad call]," he said, when asked about the penalty. "Most of you know that I try to be professional all the time.

"But it's disappointing to lose a game 1-0 to a penalty like that. I don't know 100% if there was no contact [between the players] but you have to ask Lee Kwan-woo if he could've have stayed on his feet.

"But listening to Jeremy and the other defenders, it's disappointing to see a quality player like Lee Kwan-woo have to beat his opponent in that manner. I'll leave it at that."

Nonetheless, Weaver admitted his side also had themselves to blame for their failure to put away a number of good chances, but he leapt to the defence of Sufian Anuar, who tried his hardest in the absence of the suspended Mislav Karoglan but was just let down by his final touch.

"Of course I have to be concerned when we're not scoring goals," the ex-Hougang United boss conceded.

"But you have to see our situation where the main striker [Karoglan] is suspended and someone who's good enough to be a starter and has proven that in the past comes in, but is just having a tough time in terms of confidence.

"When you see the work Sufian puts in in training, especially now that it's the fasting month, you can't be critical of him. He's in there and had chances and it's one thing that all strikers go through.

"Sufian's done extremely well in terms of his work rate in training and games and it will come. If you work as hard and smart as he does, it will come."

The result also means Warriors' hopes of finishing inside the top six are almost all but over but the Englishman is refusing to give up hope, and hopes his players can take the positives from their recent displays.

"Of course, we're disappointed that we lost because this was a big, big game," he added. "Had we won, it would have been game on in terms of our bid to get into the top six but now it's extremely difficult.

"But we've shown we can compete against these guys [Home] and the likes of Tampines [Rovers]. We're just missing that extra bit of quality to turn these results into wins."

Stange wants Camara

Singapore coach Bernd Stange has indicated he will call up Home United defender Serina Camara if he was willing to accept Singapore citizenship.

The 22-year-old has played in the S-league in the last 3 years and according to FIFA regulations, a player must reside 5 years in a country before he can represent it.

Stange said: "He needs a Singapore passport.....I cannot speak about that.

"But he would play tomorrow if he was available. As long as he's ready and wants to stay, he'll join us.

"He will be 28 when the 2019 Asian Cup arrives, the prefect age.

Camara arrived in Singapore when he joined the now-defunct Etoile FC in 2011 before joining Courts Young Lions last season.

He joined Home United at the start of the season and is 1 of their standout player thus far.

Home reach last 4 with ease

Home United reached the RHB Singapore Cup semis with ease as they dispatched Geylang International 5-2 overall.

In the first leg, the Protectors took a commanding position after beating Geylang International 2-0 with goals from Hafiz Rahim and Firdaus Idros.

In the second leg, Home further improved on it as Ismail Yunos added to it close-range strike and despite the Eagles pulling 1 back from Stefan Milojevic, the hosts will go on to reclaim that commanding their lead again just a minute later when Firdaus Idros fired home a cross from Masrezwan Masturi.

Indra Sahdan Daud then ended all thought of a comeback as he struck another for Home early in the second half to end the contest, although the Eagles managed another consolation effort 19 minutes from time when Jozef Kaplan netted with an emphatic strike.

Tanjong Pagar reach first semi-final in 12 years

Tanjong Pagar United reach their first RHB Singapore Cup semis in 12 years as they defeated Philippines side Loyola Meralco Sparks 5-4 overall.

In the first leg, the Jaguars took a slim lead as they won 2-1 with goals from Zerka Monsef and Benahmed Ismael. James Younghusband scored for Sparks.

In the second leg, Sparks briefly got back on level term as their Korean import Park Min Ho scored in the first half but the Jaguars took back the overall lead early in the second period through Benahmed Ismael and then open up the lead further through Hafiz Nor.

Ramdani Kamel will score Jaguars fifth goal with 15 minutes to go to end all questions on the night

Global become second Philippines side to reach semis

After Loyola Meralco Sparks became the first Philippines side to reach the semi-final RHB Singapore Cup last year, Global followed them this year as they beat League Cup champions DPMM Brunei 5-4 overall.

In the first leg, Global won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Rufino Familiar Sanchez.

In the second leg, DPMM Brunei was as good as gone as Global lead 2-0 at half time with a brace from Carlos De Murga and the Filipino will complete his hat-trick in the second half as Rufino Familiar Sanchez added a goal as well.

5-0 behind overall, DPMM Brunei then nearly staged a remarkable comeback as Artūras Rimkevičius got a brace and Tales Ricarte Dos Santos and Moreira Joao Vitor also scored to pull the score level on 4-4 on the night.

But the Brunei side could not get a fifth goal on the night to force extra-time and once again DPMM Brunei dream ended in the qurter-final.

Balestier stage comeback in second leg to be in last 4

Balestier Khalsa staged a remarkable comeback in the 2013 RHB Singapore Cup after they had lost the first leg 0-2 courtesy of goals from Fazli Jaffar and Liam Shotton and it looked as though the Tigers were on their way out of the competition.

Especially so as they hardly threatened in the first half in the second leg but eight minutes after the break, they went ahead on the night when Qiu Li struck with a fantastic 25-yard effort before Kim Min-ho fired home from close range just three minutes later to level the scores on aggregate.

With neither side able to find a winner, even after extra-time, the game then went to the dreaded penalty shootout, where Balestier beat Hougang United 4-1.

Tampines pull clear of pack

Tampines Rovers pull clear 7 points of the pack as they beat Hougang United 3-2 and they still have a game in hand as the destiny of the championship looked to be well in their hands.

In a show of the championship form, Liam Shotton had given the Cheetahs a shock lead but by half time with goals from Shaiful Esah and Khairul Amri they were ahead.

Igor Cerina level thing up in the second period but leaders and champions Tampines refused to settle for a point and with 8 minutes to go, a Kunihiro Yamashita goal saw them grabbed all 3 points.

And that is how championship are won.
